Your Future: Do You Really Want Straight Line Extrapolation?

During the past few years, I’ve helped thousands of folks benefit from my Five Year Life Quiz.

A common thread that I’ve noticed is that most people initially use the same approach.  Most simply do a straight line extrapolation of their current life when they project what they want for themselves five years into the future.

For one thing, this is the easiest approach – it doesn’t require a lot of thought and evaluation.  And, for some of us, we have already succeeded in matching our lives to what we really want.  I’m happy to say that’s our case – my wife Janet and I have already covered the important stuff and adjusted things to get us at least 85% of the way to all the stuff that was on our Five Year Life goals from five years ago.  Even looking forward, our life five years from now that we REALLY want is not that much different than what we already have.  So, if you at that same lucky point in your life, GREAT!

However, for most folks, their heartfelt wish is to end up with major changes in their typical life.   Their current Point A and their desired Point B are usually miles apart.  Your answers to these 82 Questions in the Five Year Life Quiz should reflect what you REALLY want for YOUR Point B.

Take an extra half hour and consider your Point B.  Print out the questions, fold up the pages and carry them around in your purse or back pocket for a few days and scribble down new ideas and thoughts about all the changes you want.  Add more questions to the 82.  Be “realistically aggressive” knowing you don’t have to settle for your current Point A – or even something similar – unless you want to.

Now, go back and try answering those 82 Questions again – unconstrained by straight line extrapolation – and have what you REALLY want out of life for your Point B.

  • Robert,

I found that the 82 questions took me about an hour to answer.

I thought it would take longer, but “going with gut” answers made my first run quick and easy.

Now it’ll be interesting to go back after we do a few coaching calls together and see if I do any corrections. My “carry along” answers will probably be more detailed, but I do recommend anyone who attacks the 82 questions for the first time, to do so on a “fire, ready, aim” basis.

Many thanks for your leadership, Robert.

    All good wishes,

    Alex Mandossian
