Swine Flu – No Cost / Low Cost Defenses Against H1N1

H1N1 AKA Swine Flu looks to be particularly nasty this year.  Five Year Life typically helps you focus on your five year future – but in this case we wanted to share some helpful ideas that could impact your immediate future and keep you healthy.

A friend sent us the following.  The author is unknown – but the clear practicality of all of the suggestions are so good that we include them here for your consideration.

Tamiflu does not kill but prevents H1N1 from further proliferation till the virus limits itself in about 1-2 weeks (its natural cycle).

H1N1, like other Influenza A viruses, only infects the upper respiratory tract and proliferates (only) there.  The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/ throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it’s almost impossible not coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions.

Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is. While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps – not fully highlighted in most official communications – can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

  • Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).
  • “Hands-off-the-face” approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).
  • Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don’t trust salt). H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don’t underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.
  • Similar to 3 above, clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.
  • Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc/bioflavonoids to boost absorption.
  • Drink as much of warm liquids as you can. Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

All these are simple ways to prevent, within means of most households, and certainly much less painful than to wait in long queues outside public hospitals.

Janet and I plan on supplementing these suggestions with daily doses of our steam room and sauna – for similar reasons listed above.

Also, our friends at Google are being helpful – letting everyone track, both nationally and worldwide, the spread of this season’s flu.  Take a look at Google Flu Trends for graphical insights.

Stay healthy, folks…we both want you to enjoy every moment possible between now – and five years from now.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park – Spruce Flats Waterfall Trail 083009

Great Smoky Mountains National Park – Spruce Flats Waterfall Trail 083009. An unmaintained trail that is not on any of the hiking maps or books. More strenuous than we expected, lot of rocks to climb over. About 3 hours round trip including 30 minutes at the waterfall (those are geezer hours – the young and fit (including Jan) could do it in 2/3 my time.)

Probably the second best waterfall we’ve seen so far with all of our hikes all over the Park. Probably Abrams Falls would rank the best – although this one is close!

Your Future: Do You Really Want Straight Line Extrapolation?

During the past few years, I’ve helped thousands of folks benefit from my Five Year Life Quiz.

A common thread that I’ve noticed is that most people initially use the same approach.  Most simply do a straight line extrapolation of their current life when they project what they want for themselves five years into the future.

For one thing, this is the easiest approach – it doesn’t require a lot of thought and evaluation.  And, for some of us, we have already succeeded in matching our lives to what we really want.  I’m happy to say that’s our case – my wife Janet and I have already covered the important stuff and adjusted things to get us at least 85% of the way to all the stuff that was on our Five Year Life goals from five years ago.  Even looking forward, our life five years from now that we REALLY want is not that much different than what we already have.  So, if you at that same lucky point in your life, GREAT!

However, for most folks, their heartfelt wish is to end up with major changes in their typical life.   Their current Point A and their desired Point B are usually miles apart.  Your answers to these 82 Questions in the Five Year Life Quiz should reflect what you REALLY want for YOUR Point B.

Take an extra half hour and consider your Point B.  Print out the questions, fold up the pages and carry them around in your purse or back pocket for a few days and scribble down new ideas and thoughts about all the changes you want.  Add more questions to the 82.  Be “realistically aggressive” knowing you don’t have to settle for your current Point A – or even something similar – unless you want to.

Now, go back and try answering those 82 Questions again – unconstrained by straight line extrapolation – and have what you REALLY want out of life for your Point B.

82 Questions – 82 Action Items – 82 Ways to Get There Quicker

There are 82 Questions in the Five Year Life Quiz.

Each of these questions prompt you to describe a facet of your life five years from now – the way you want it to be.

The good news is that you don’t have to wait five years for any or all of them.  For each of your answers to these 82 questions, develop a detailed action plan to accomplish each one.  For example, if one of your goals is to start your own company, figure out what you have to do, what you have to save, to quit your job and generate a living wage while you get the company rolling.  List every step you can thing of and then assign a time line to each step.  Then, go start getting steps done and checked off the list.

Remember, the thing that separates dreams from plans is action.

You might be surprised how fast you can make many of those 82 Projections of your future come true – maybe a lot sooner than later.

And, guess what?  Pretty soon you may have most of them done – which means you already have most of what you wanted five years from now.   All without having to wait that long.

Don’t know the 82 right questions yet?
