Long Bio (approximately 175 words)
Robert Lee Goodman, MBA, is the founder and author of the Five Year Life™ Series — five books that form a complete architecture for navigating job loss, identity reset, relationship design, and career reinvention in the Age of AI. A physicist who worked at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center during the Apollo program, he went on to personally found 44 companies and raise $114 million from 1,342 investors across more than 70 countries. He spent decades working directly, one-on-one, inside the companies of more than 3,000 startup founders and CEOs — helping each of them find the path from their current reality to their most desired future.
In parallel, he undertook a decade-long personal quest — Novelist Seeks Heroine — that generated 2 million visitors, 15,000+ candidates, and 1,200+ first dates, all rooted in radical honesty about what people truly want from love and lasting partnership. That quest ended with one wonderful marriage two dozen years ago with the one woman in 2 million.
Together, those two worlds produced more than 33,000 deeply candid, one-on-one relationships with people who couldn’t see their own best path forward — and who were looking to him to help them find it. He calls the accumulated wisdom from those relationships Compound Knowledge™. It is the foundation of every book in the Five Year Life™ Series. He lives in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, intentionally adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, with his wife, Jan.

Sample Q&A — Ready to Use
Q: You’ve founded 44 companies and had 1,200 first dates. How do those two things possibly connect?
More than you’d expect. In both cases, you’re sitting across from someone trying to figure out if this is the right fit — and so are you. The questions that matter in a first investor meeting and a first date are surprisingly similar: Is this person honest about what they want? Do their stated goals match their actual behavior? Are they willing to do the hard work? After enough of both kinds of relationships, you stop being surprised by people. You start being useful to them instead.
Q: What is Compound Knowledge™ and why does it matter to someone reading your books?
It’s the accumulated wisdom that builds when each new relationship deepens everything you already knew from the previous ones. Money compounds over time. Knowledge compounds across people. I’ve had more than 33,000 deeply candid one-on-one relationships — with startup founders navigating crises and with tens of thousands of people navigating love — and in every single one, someone was looking to me to help them find the path they couldn’t see from where they were standing. That’s not a credential. That’s a foundation.
Q: Why does Your Last Paycheck come first in the series?
Because 40 million Americans were laid off in the past 24 months — and a lot of them are trying to make long-term decisions while they’re in short-term panic. The first job of the book is to stop the bleeding fast. The second job is to help them see that they’re not looking for a new employer. They’re the CEO of You, Inc. — and they’re looking for multiple buyers for their time and expertise. That mindset shift changes everything that comes after it.
Q: You say people should think of themselves as the CEO of You, Inc. What does that actually mean in practice?
It means you stop asking “who’s hiring?” and start asking “who needs what I do best?” A CEO doesn’t depend on one client. They build a portfolio. Multiple buyers for your time and expertise means income diversification — and it means no single paycheck can ever again be your last one. The vocabulary changes, and when the vocabulary changes, the decisions change. That’s not motivational language. That’s a structural shift in how you operate.
Q: After 33,000 relationships, what’s the single most common mistake you’ve watched people make — in business and in love?
They choose the path that looks safe over the path that is most desired — and then spend years wondering why they feel vaguely dissatisfied with a life that looks perfectly fine from the outside. In business, it shows up as founders who build the company their investors want instead of the one they believe in. In love, it shows up as people who settle for compatible instead of holding out for aligned. The gap between safe and desired is where most of the quiet suffering lives. Both Reset Protocol and Efficient Love are built to close that gap.
Q: The Five Year Life Series covers job loss, life reset, love, and an erotic techno-thriller. What ties those together?
They are all, at their core, about the same thing: people who cannot clearly see the path from where they are right now to where they most want to be. The circumstances are different. The underlying problem is identical. A founder who cannot name what she actually wants from her company makes the same category of mistake as a person who cannot name what they actually need from a partner. Compound Knowledge built from 33,000 relationships across both domains is the thread that runs through all five books — including the novel, where that same blindness to desire drives everything that goes wrong.
Q: What does Reset Protocol actually do that a therapist or life coach doesn’t?
A therapist works backward through what happened. A life coach works forward from where you are. Reset Protocol does something different: it forces you to name, with unusual precision, where you actually want to go — before building any plan to get there. Most people have never done that. They’ve planned routes to destinations they chose by default. The 108 questions are organized by how you feel right now, not by topic, because the place to start is wherever your real friction lives — not wherever someone else’s curriculum begins.
Q: Stark Naked Startup is described as erotic romance meets techno-thriller. How does a rocket scientist and management consultant end up writing that?
Thirty years of watching what happens when brilliant, driven people are isolated by their ambition and starved for genuine connection. The four founders in Florence didn’t set out to build something dangerous. They set out to solve loneliness — which turns out to be one of the most powerful motivations in human history, and one of the most disruptive when the solution actually works. The erotic elements are not gratuitous. They are the honest consequence of four people building something world-altering while living in one of the most seductive cities on earth. The governments noticed for the same reason anyone notices something that actually solves a problem no one else has solved.

Novelist Who Successfully Found His Heroine
P.S. — If you’ve ever wondered what 1,200 first dates, 15,000 serious relationships, and a decade-long personal quest actually produce — there’s a page on this site you probably shouldn’t miss. It’s the real backstory behind Efficient Love™ and the decade that made it possible. Some of it is embarrassing. All of it is true. And somewhere inside it is the methodology that led me to the one woman in 2 million who became my wife.
→ The Story Behind Novelist Seeks Heroine™
P.P.S. — The frameworks in these books didn’t come from research or theory. They came from something far harder to replicate: 33,000 deeply candid, one-on-one relationships — across business and love — with people who couldn’t see their own best path forward and were looking to me to help them find it. If you want to understand why these books are different from anything else you’ll find, that’s where the answer lives.
